The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society by Mary Ann Shaffer
This is a wonderful book. A fictional compilation of letters set in the period just after World War II, it is full of enjoyable characters and even has its own little mystery.
Writer Juliet discovers that the island of Guernsey was occupied by the German army during the war. Through her correspondence with some of the island's residents, she forms an ongoing relationship with them, and we the readers come to understand a little of what it might have been like to be isolated in this way, and why friendship and books can be so valuable.
