Freddie Steen, Canberran of the Year 1984

Freddie Steen arrived in Canberra from Tasmania to work in the Commonwealth Deparmtne of Education where she administered the newly established Adult Migrant Education Program for the ACT and Queanbeyan.

Born in the Netherlands during World War II, Freddie migrated to Australian as a child with her family in 1950.  The Steens and a number of other Dutch families settled in Tasmania.  Her experiences as a child migrant informed her professional and community work in adult migrant education and refugee support.

Freddie currently lives in Brisbane where she is retired but still active in refugee support.

Further biographical detail about Freddie Steen is available on our website, as is a history of the Canberra Citizen of the Year Award and a full list of awardees.

The 40th consecutive Canberra Citizen of the Year will be announced by the Chief Minister during Canberra Day Celebrations in March 2016.
