Peter Leonard, Canberra Citizen of the Year 1991

Born in Yass, Peter Leonard attended Canberra Grammar School.

His love affair with broadcasting began with work experience reading advertisements on radio station 2CA.  Peter continued there as a cadet reporter and copyrighter in 1962 after 18 months working in the public service.

Peter returned to the public service in 1970, and combined working in the National Captial Development Commission with reading the news at the ABC, just across the road from his office on Northbourne Avenue until 1991 when he joined WIN News Canberra.

Peter Leonard was named Canberra Citizen of the Year in 1991 for his sustained contribution to the community through his Board membership of the MS Society, and Cancer Society.

Further biographical detail about Peter Leonard is available on our website, as is a history of the Canberra Citizen of the Year Award and a full list of awardees.

The 40th consecutive Canberra Citizen of the Year will be announced by the Chief Minister during Canberra Day Celebrations in March 2016.
